By Becca Parish, MBA, LNHA – Executive Director of Health Care Services
We would like to welcome Dr. Joseph Rees as our new Medical Director. Dr. Rees officially began as Dow Rummel’s Medical Director on July 1, 2020, although he has unofficially served as a resource for us in many ways, such as screening our nursing staff for N95 fit testing protocol back in June. He also has been a resource for us through Avera eCare which has been providing telehealth services to the Health Care Center since January.
Joseph Rees, DO, also the Medical Director for Avera eCare Senior Care, began his career at Avera McKennan Medical Center and University Center as a Hospitalist in Sioux Falls. While practicing at Avera McKennan, Dr. Rees also served as Co-Director of the Internal Medicine Department, where he provided oversite to the internal medical residents and medical students for Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota. Dr. Rees attended Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, where he received his Doctor of Osteopathy and completed his internal medicine residency and Geriatric fellowship at Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.
Dr. Rees fills the shoes of Dr. Fred Thanel, MD, who retired at the end of June. Dr. Rees has already been seen rounding in the licensed care areas and has attended July’s Quality of Life and Quality Assessment Performance Improvement monthly meetings. We are happy to have him join the Dow Rummel family and look forward to his presence and medical leadership in the months and years to come. Welcome, Dr. Rees!
